A Police Inspector identified as Nelson Abuante and deployed to the Taabaa Division of The Rivers State Police Command, on Sunday 17 December 2023, shot himself dead with his force issued assault rifle after he accidentally shot a colleague during an arrest operation. According to witness accounts, Nelson Abuante accidentally shot a fellow Inspector named Monday Gbaramana while they had both been trying to round up a suspect at Nyogor-Lueku in the Khana Local Government Area of the state.

The suspect who had been reported at the police station by his mother had in the course of resisting arrest, led Inspector Abuante to accidentally shoot his colleague while trying to apprehend the suspect. Further reports state that Gbaramana was immediately evacuated to hospital for treatment of the injuries he sustained from the gunshot, but died en route as the vehicle being used to convey him ran out of petrol. Upon realisation of his colleague's demise, Abuante turned the gun on himself, corked it and shot himself dead on learning about the death of his colleague. Spokesperson of the Rivers Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, said the remains of the two Inspectors have been deposited at the mortuary while investigation is ongoing.
