Following the current circulation of counterfeit photos of various products ranging from food items, consumer goods and even insecticide, being shared on social media by Nigerians, many netizens have taken to Twitter to eulogise deceased former NAFDAC director-general, Professor Dora Akunyili. Professor Dora Akunyili who passed away on 7 June 2014, was DG of NAFDAC from 2001 to 2008 and in the course of her tenure, was responsible for discovering and prosecuting many producers of counterfeit products across Nigeria. In the year 2012, her book: The War Against Counterfeit Medicine: My Story was published. Professor Akunyili reportedly received over nine hundred awards in the course of her career.

In the eulogies on social media, netizens referred to the deceased professor Akunyili as "incorruptible" while stating that majority of counterfeiters would have been facing legal charges as well as serving prison sentences if she were still alive and in her role as DG of the agency. It is well-known that in her capacity as director-general of NAFDAC the late professor Dora Akunyili, escaped a series of assassination attempts.
