France Bans Nigerian Students from Bringing Families into The Country

The French Government has joined the growing list of countries that have laid down stricter policies for international students and immigrants, by restricting them from entering the country with their families. The immigration bill which was approved on Tuesday 19 December 2023, was backed by both President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Renaissance party and Deputy of the French National Assembly, Marine Le Pen’s far-right National Rally.

In addition to the stricter policies on bringing family into France, the new immigration policy by the French government delays access to welfare benefits such as family allowance. Henceforth, immigrants who do not work will have to wait for 5 years until they are eligible, compared to 30 months for workers. The readjusted policies also make it more difficult for children of immigrants to acquire French citizenship(the children now have to apply for the citizenship at the age of 18)and makes being in France without the proper immigration papers an offence.
