No less than 150 people have been killed in an earthquake that struck a remote pocket of Nepal overnight. Video footage on local media showed crumbled facades of multi-storied brick houses. People were pictured digging through rubble in the dark to pull survivors from the remains of collapsed buildings in posts on social media. The earthquake which occurred at about 23:47pm local time on Friday 3rd November 2023, while most citizens were asleep, was a shallow earthquake that happened close to the earth's surface. According to Nepali authorities, search and rescue operations on foot and through helicopters, remain ongoing to rescue as many victims as possible. However, officials are facing difficulties establishing contact with areas in Jajarkot, a hilly district with a population of 190,000 and villages scattered in remote hills.

This is the third earthquake Nepal has experienced since the year 2015. In April and May 2015, the country suffered two devastating earthquakes in which 9,000 people were killed and 22,309 injured with over one million damaged structures. Nepalese Prime Minister, Pushpa Kamal Dahal arrived at the site of the quake on Saturday after expressing his “deep sorrow over the human and physical damage”.
