The Central Bank of Nigeria has debunked claims of cash scarcity at banks, automated teller machines, Points of Sale, and Bureaux de Change in various major cities nationwide. The apex bank emphatically dismissed these rumours of currency scarcity in an official statement signed by the Director of Corporate Communications, Isa AbdulMumin, shared on their X account on Thursday, 2nd November.

The Central Bank alleged that any seeming cash scarcity, is as a result of panic withdrawals by customers from the ATM. The Central Bank urged Nigerians to embrace other forms of payment which would reduce pressure on the need for physical cash. It will be recalled that the administration of Godwin Emefiele, immediate past governor CBN had earlier in the year, told Nigerians that the current 200, 500 and 1000 naira notes would cease to be legal tender from 31st December 2023 to be replaced by new notes. However, following the swearing in of Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president of the country, all of the plans to change the legal tender were halted and Nigerians informed to use the new notes alongside the old ones.
