A Nigerian man identified as John Obot is currently in the process of breaking the Guinness World Records of Longest Marathon Reading Aloud by an Individual. John Obot who commenced his marathon reading on Saturday September 9th, 2023 is in the process of attempting nonstop reading for a total of 145 hours and is expected to successfully complete the marathon on Friday 15th September 2023. John Obot's marathon reading is taking place at the City View Hall, Watbridge Hotel, located in Uyo Akwa Ibom state.

John Obot is a member of the Uyo Book Club and at the time of this writing, has been reading aloud for a total of 17 hours and intends to read a total of 42 books written by black authors. The current holder of the Guinness World Records Longest Marathon Reading Aloud is Krygzstani Rysbai Isakov who achieved a feat of reciting the Manas Epic(a 10th-century legendary hero of the Kyrgyz people, who value him as their sacred ancient father) in 124 hours from 22nd to 27th September 2022 in Bursa, Turkey.
