On Friday 11 August 2023, tragedy struck at the Zaria Central Mosque located in Kaduna state, when some sections of the historic mosque collapsed. The tragic incident which claimed the lives of four worshippers and caused serious injury to at least seven others, was confirmed by Emir of Zazzau, Mallam Ahmed Nuhu Bamalli. The traditional ruler stated that the victims had been observing the 4:00pm Asr prayer when the prayerhouse caved in. The Emir while stating that the palace had been in process of deploying an engineering team to take care of crack that had been noticed on the wall of the now crumbled mosque, directed that the funeral prayer of all the corpses will be observed today at 8.30pm at the emir’s palace.

Reacting to the unfortunate incident, Governor of Kano, Senator Uba Sani offered his heartfelt condolences to the Emir and the entire Muslim community over the irreparable loss. The governor who assured that the Kaduna state government will assist those affected by the collapse, also promised that immediate investigation will comence in order ascertain the cause of the tragic collapse.
