Students of the Faculty of Law, University of Calabar, on Monday 14 August, protested against persistent sexual harassment meted them by the Dean of the faculty, Prof Cyril Ndifon. The students, wielding different placards, chanted and demanded an end to the sexual harassment from the Professor. In 2015, Prof Ndifon was entangled in a harassment scandal after he was accused of sexually assaulting a 20 year old 400 level student in his office. The professor who happens to be UNICAL's first professor of law, was suspended by the university following public outcry. Ndifon sued the Institution and lost the case at the Calabar Division of the National Industrial Court on September 21, 2016. Attempts by Ndifon to stop the ICPC from intervening in the case also met a brick wall as Justice Inyang Ekwo dismissed the suit he filed on March 02, 2017. Surprisingly, he was reinstated to his position as Faculty Dean in December last year.
Reacting to the protest by the students of the faculty, Ndifon described the allegations as "lies that were cooked from the pit of hell just to tarnish his image." In the professor's words: "Since I defeated some persons in an election that was keenly contested, to emerge as Dean of the faculty, it hasn’t been easy. I had skipped several booby traps. These allegations are baselessly masterminded by my detractors, who had vowed to ensure that my image is dragged to the mud just because I won the faculty".
