Pakistan's Former PM Receives Three Year Prison Sentence on Corruption Charges

 70 year old former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan has received a three year prison sentence over corruption allegations. Imran Khan who served as 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan from August 2018 to April 2022, was found guilty of selling state gifts received during official visits abroad. The 70 year old cricketer-turned-politician was accused of misusing his premiership from 2018 to 2022 to buy and sell gifts in state possession that were received during visits abroad and worth more than 140 million Pakistani rupees ($497,500).Legal experts say the conviction could end Imran Khan's chances of taking part in national elections.

Following his arrest and subsequent sentencing, Imran who denied any wrongdoing and rejected the judge's verdict, called on supporters to "stand up for your country". In a video message, the now convicted politician urged people to peacefully protest until they get their rights, namely a government of their choice through voting and "not the one like today's occupying power." Lahore's Police Chief Bilal Siddique Kamiana, has confirmed that Mr Khan was being transferred to the capital, Islamabad.
