On Wednesday 16 August 2022, a jury in a New Zealand found a woman identified as Lauren Ann Dickason, guilty of killing her three young children. 42 year old Lauren and her family migrated to New Zealand from their native South Africa one mother before she killed her children. The now convicted murderer killed her two year old twin daughters alongside their six year old sister in September 2021 at their home in Timaru, a city on the South Island. According to reports, Lauren's husband Graham had discovered the three children dead and his wife in a serious condition upon returning home from dinner with colleagues.

The jury made up of 8 women and 4 men, rejected Lauren's defense of being mentally ill at the time she murdered her children. She had pled not guilty to murder, arguing she was suffering severe depression that could be traced back to postpartum depression. Prosecutors acknowledged Dickason had suffered from depression but said it wasn't enough to warrant a medical defense. They said she killed her children out of anger and resentment. Prosecutors pointed to Dickason's troubling phone messages and online history in the weeks before the killings, including comments about wanting to kill her children and Google searches for "most effective overdose in kids", as evidence that she had been fully aware of her crime.
