Malawi Police Rescues Infant Buried Alive by Biological Mother

 The police at Lunzu, an area of Blantyre , southern region of Malawi, have rescued an infant who was buried alive by her 21 year old mother. According to Malawi24, police public relations officer Sergeant Jonathan Philippi, revealed that the identified suspect was Olivia Jonas, 21 year old mother of the infant who had been eight months pregnant when she home delivered a baby girl and proceeded to bury the newborn at a nearby forest without informing anyone. Olivia Jonas who hails from Mjamba Village in the area of Traditional Authority Kapeni in Blantyre District, had allegedly waited for her husband to return from work and promptly told him that she had suffered a miscarriage, her husband had immediately taken her to the hospital for treatment.

Upon arrival at the Mlambe hospital and interrogation from nurses, Olivia had again claimed to have delivered a dead baby whom she buried in a nearby bush. The hospital informed the police who promptly rushed to the hospital where they interviewed the suspect who revealed that she buried the child after giving birth. Afterwards, Olivia Jonas led police officers and medical officers from the hospital to the scene where she buried the child. The spot was exhumed and it was discovered that the baby was still alive and healthy. The suspect who is expected to answer charges of concealing birth of a child, is currently receiving medical attention at the hospital.
