Elevator Crash: NMA Declares Indefinite Strike Action over Young Doctor's Death

 Following the elevator crash on Tuesday 1st August, which led to the death of resident doctor Vwaere Diaso at the  General Hospital located in Odan, Lagos Island, the Nigerian Medical Association has ordered all doctors working in the three government hospitals on Lagos Island to begin an indefinite strike action. The hospitals to embark on the indefinite strike action are: The General Hospital, Odan, Lagos; Lagos Island Maternity Hospital, Lagos, and the Massey Street Children’s Hospital, Lagos.

In a press statement signed by Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association Dr Dr. Benjamin Olowojebutu, and Secretary, Ismail Ajibowo, on Wednesday 2nd August 2023, the association labelled Dr Vwaere Diaso's death which occurred as a result of a crash of a faulty elevator, an "avoidable death" and demanded immediate and unbiased investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.  In addition to the commencement of a strike action, the Nigerian Medical Association declared a 5 day nationwide mourning period and urged doctors in other government hospitals to scale down activities in honour of the deceased Dr Vwaere Diaso.
