Ecuadorian Presidential Candidate Assassinated 2 Weeks to Election

 Ecuadorian journalist, politician and Presidential hopeful, Fernando Villavicencio has been shot dead following a campaign event, prompting authorities to declare a nationwide state of emergency. Prior to his assassination in the capital city Quito, on Wednesday 9th August 2023, the 59 year old anti-corruption campaigner, had complained of receiving death threats. Villavicencio had received multiple death threats; including one from the Sinaloa Cartel during his presidential campaign, with the most recent being a week before he was shot in the head.

Referring to Villavicencio's assassination two weeks before the presidential election, outgoing Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso declared a three day nationwide mourning and a two-month state of emergency. He also stated that the general elections scheduled for August 20, would be held as planned. President Lasso also assured the nation that the crime would not go unpunished while warning that Ecuador had become a failed state and  those who try to sow "more hate" with Villavicencio's death "will only continue to destroy the country.
