Coup: Nigeria Cuts Off Electricity Supply To Niger Republic

Nigeria has cut off power supply to Niger republic leaving major cities in the country facing rolling blackouts.

This is coming on the heels of last week's coup in the West African country.

According to Nigelec, Nigeria cut supplies to the Niger's electricity company, causing major blackouts in the country.

ECOWAS led by President Tinubu of Nigeria had imposed sanctions on Niger over the coup but has not said if these include electricity supplies.

ECOWAS defence chiefs are in Nigeria to discuss the Niger crisis, with the body giving Niger's military junta a week to give up power or face possible military intervention.

Even though the Transmission Company of Nigeria has not issued a statement on the power cuts in Niger, an anonymous source told the BBC the supply to Niger was cut on Tuesday due to a presidential directive.
