A British Nurse identified as Lucy Letby has received a sentence of life imprisonment after she was found guilty of killing 7 babies as well as the attempted murder of 6 other infants. Lucy Letby had carried out her nefarious activities while working as a nurse in the neonatal unit of a hospital in Northern England. Following 22 days of deliberation, a jury at Manchester Crown Court convicted Letby of a yearlong spree killing the babies. The victims, including two sets of triplet boys, were killed in the neonatal unit at the Countess of Chester Hospital in northwest England between June 2015 and June 2016. Lucy Letby refused to appear in court for her sentence hearing and the judge ordered that copies of impact statements from victims' families be sent to the serial killer. The mother of a baby boy killed by Letby said she was "horrified that someone so evil exists". Letby's parents, who had been present throughout her trial, did not attend her sentence hearing.Letby was given multiple whole-life terms - one for each offence - becoming only the fourth woman in UK history to receive such a sentence. Whole-life orders are the most severe punishment available and are reserved for those who commit the most heinous crimes.
