5 Children Burn to Death While Mothers Partied Overnight

Five children, including a one-year-old girl, have died in an inferno which destroyed at least six shacks in Itireleng informal settlement near Laudium in Tshwane, South Africa, in the early hours of Sunday 27th August. Spokesperson for the Tshwane emergency services department, Thabo Charles Mabaso, in a statement on Monday, August 28, said the children's mothers(who are sisters) allegedly left them alone overnight and went out to drink at a nearby tavern. He also said the circumstances surrounding the cause of the fire are still under investigation.

At the time of releasing the statement, the sisters were under police arrest and had been taken to a local police station for questioning. Thabo Charles Mbaso called upon parents and caregivers to ensure that children are always left under the care of an adult and in a safe environment. In July,  four people died in two separate shack fire incidents in Johannesburg. Thus leading to an increased apprehension on the safety of residents and owners of shack homes as up to 10 million residents of South Africa live in shack houses. The living conditions of people who live in shacks are terrible, because they typically have no electricity, running water or toilets.
