Veteran Musician Monday "Edo" Igbinidu Slams #200m Lawsuit on Shallipopi

Veteran Nigerian highlife musician Monday Edosomwan(Edo) Igbinidu, has stated his intention to sue fast rising singer Crown Uzama better known as Shallipopi, for copyright infringement. Monday Edo Igbinidu in a letter sent via his legal team Chris Otasowie & Associates, on Tuesday 25th July, demanded that Shallipopi pays a sum of N200 million naira for the unauthorized use of his song "Ovonramwen" in his (Shalipopi's) record "Obapluto".

Alongside the monetary demand, the letter requested a written apology from the young musician over his copyright infringement. The apology is expected to be published in at least two notable and widely read newspapers and on all social media handles used by Shallipopi for the promotion of the song which resulted in the copyright infringement. The musician via his lawyers issued a 5 day ultimatum to Shallipopi and his management.

In an interview, Monday Edo Igbinidu claims to be tricked by Shallipopi's mother who happened to be a former neighbour, as she had called a few days after Shallipopi released his new song, telling him that he had been the inspiration behind the song. The veteran singer further narrated that woman had sent him a sum of 50,000 naira as "appreciation'' while he had remained unaware of the extent of Shallipopi's intellectual theft. Monday Edo Igbinidu lamented that Shallipopi and his mother have peddled the story that they paid him this agreed sum in order to obtain permission to sample and remix his song.
