Tinubu Elected 63rd ECOWAS Chairman

 President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu, has emerged 63rd chairman of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States. Tinubu succeeded President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau as ECOWAS chair. Tinubu's election as ECOWAS chair took place at the organisation's Sixty-third Ordinary Session.  Former President of Nigeria Muhammadu Buhari had previously occupied the position from 2018 to 2019. After receiving his handover documents from the outgoing chairman and President Umaro Embaló of Guinea-Bissau, Tinubu said, “We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the form of government".

The Economic Community of West African States is headquartered in Abuja Nigeria and has 15 member states; eight of these are French-speaking, five are English-speaking, and two Portuguese-speaking. All current members joined the community as founding members in May 1975, except Cape Verde which joined in 1977. ECOWAS also serves as a peacekeeping force in the region, with member states occasionally sending joint military forces to intervene in the bloc's member countries at times of political instability and unrest.
