The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has declared an indefinite nationwide strike. The strike action which was declared on the night of Tuesday 25th July 2023, will be ongoing until the demands of the resident doctors are met. The strike action comes after the association on July 5, issued a two-week ultimatum to the Federal Government for the implementation of all of its demands.

President of the association, Dr Emeka Innocent Orji disclosed this intention during the National Executive Council of the association held in Lagos on Tuesday According to Dr Orji, the major demands of the association are: Immediate payment of the 2023 Medical Residency Training Fund (MRTF) , immediate release of the circular on one-for-one replacement , payment of skipping arrears and upward review of CONMESS in line with full salary restoration to the 2014 value of CONMESS. In an attempt to avert the strike action, Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, on Monday, held deliberations with the leadership of NARD behind closed doors. The deliberations ended in deadlock.
