Gloria Carter, mother of famous rapper and record producer, Shawn Corey Carter better known as Jay Z, has married her longtime lesbian partner Roxanne Wilshire, in New York City. The ceremony which took place on Sunday 2nd July, had Jay Z, his wife Beyonce, actor and film producer Tyler Perry as well as Kelly Rowland in attendance. Jay Z first spoke of his mother's sexual orientation in a track titled "Smile" off his 2017 Album 4:44. In his words: "Mama had four kids, but she’s a lesbian / Had to pretend so long that she’s a thespian.”

Jay-Z also confirmed in an interview with David Letterman on the Netflix series My Next Guest Needs No Introduction, that he had shed tears of joy upon discovering his mother fell in love. Gloria has recounted how she told her son about this undeniable truth, and how that left the rapper in tears. Gloria Carter is Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the Shawn Carter Foundation. She has received numerous honours for the impactful contributions she made through the Shawn Carter Foundation to local, national and global communities.
