Nigerian professor of economics Patrick Okedinachi Utomi, popularly referred to as Pat Utomi, has expressed traumatization over the viral video of lawmakers "mocking" the poor in respect to the #8,000 family palliative proposed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The professor in a Tweet, stated that to "mock the poor is to mock God" and lamented the lack of empathy amongst the Nigerian lawmakers. Pat Utomi further threw digs at senate president Godswill Akpabio while stating that it is better to be "an honest poor than a rich thief politician". In the video, the Senate President had repeatedly used the phrase "let the poor breathe" in jocular reference to the economic hardship in the country during a plenary session.

Professor Pat Utomi the founder of Centre for Value in Leadership (CVL) and the African Democratic Congress. He is a professor at Lagos Business School and has served in senior positions in government, as an adviser to the president of Nigeria. Utomi also ran a failed attempt for presidency of Nigeria in 2011. In 2021, Pat and other political stakeholders pioneered the formation of a new political opposition ahead of the 2023 Nigerian general elections.
