Former governor of Zamfara state, Ahmed Sani Yerima, has stated in an interview with Channels Television that he did not regret marrying his 15 year old Egyptian child bride. In 2010, the then 50 year old Yerima had shocked Nigerians when news broke that he had married a 15 year old bride from Egypt at the Abuja national mosque. The news had led to widespread outrage from various child rights activist within and outside Nigeria.

On Friday 7th July 2023, as a guest on a Channels Television's programme titled Politics Today, Yerima had defended his decision to marry the child bride in 2010. He emphasized that the marriage had not stopped her education as his wife is currently acquiring a Master's degree. The former governor further defended his choice by stating that he had allowed his 16 year old daughter get married and she had gone on to acquire a PhD in the course of the marriage. Senator Yerima passionately argued on the show that marriage does not stop a female child from acquiring an education. He also argued that hos decisions on marriage were in accordance with the Sharia law. Yerima was the first Nigerian state governor to implement Sharia law in his state, which came into effect on 27 January 2000.
