World's Largest Kidney Stone Removed from a Sri Lankan Man

In a groundbreaking medical feat, doctors have successfully removed the world’s largest and heaviest kidney stone from the body of a 62 year old retired soldier from Sri Lanka named Canistus Coonghe. The record-breaking kidney stone had settled itself within Coonghe’s right kidney, causing significant discomfort and necessitating urgent intervention. According to the surgeons, the kidney stone was the size of a grapefruit, as long as a banana and as heavy as four hamsters.

The previous holder for the world’s largest kidney stone had held the record since February 2004, when a 13 cm (5.11 in) stone was surgically extracted from an Indian man named Vilas Ghuge, who is alive to this day. Despite the size of Canistus Coonghe's record breaking kidney, his surgical team reported that his liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and spleen were all deemed “normal” in size. Coonghe is now on his way to full recovery with his kidney continuing to perform its vital functions without impediment.
