The National Examination Council (NECO) has received strict instructions from the Government via the Federal Ministry of Education to prevent underaged children from sitting the National Common Entrance Examination. NECO has been directed by the government to ensure that all pupils who intend to sit for the entrance examination into unity schools across the country, provide birth certificates as mandatory registration requirement.
According to the federal government, all pupils attempting to get into unity schools and federal government colleges across the nation must be at least 12 years of age. The federal government further stated that a pupil could be eleven plus during the examination, but must reach 12 years of age before September which marks the resumption of a new school year. Peermanent secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, David Adejo, gave the directive on Saturday, June 3, in Abuja while monitoring the conduct of the 2023 Common Entrance Examination into the 116 Federal Government Colleges across the Federation. After monitoring the exercise at the Federal Government Girls College, Bwari, and Government Day Secondary School, Bwari, the Permanent Secretary said he was unhappy to see many underage persons taking the examination.
