National Assembly Passes Bill to Prohibit Harassment Punish Sexual Offenders in Higher Institutions

 The National Assembly has passed a bill  prohibiting sexual harassment by lecturers and ensuring punishment of offenders in tertiary institutions. The Senate first passed this bill in 2020 while the House of Representatives passed theirs on Wednesday June 7 2023, but with different provisions. The purpose of the bill which has 25 clauses, is to ensure criminalization of sexual harassment by educators against students in tertiary institutions. The National Assembly also passed a legislation to make compulsory, the inclusion of preventive measures against sexual and gender based violence in the curriculum of all levels of secondary education in Nigeria.

Chairman Senate Committee on Judiciary, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele stated that the conference committee of both chambers harmonised the different positions as he presented the report during plenary session. The bill had originally been prepared and waited assent from former president Muhammadu Buhari but the ex-president but he had delayed on signing the bill into law. Senator Ovie Omo-Agege and 106 senators are original sponsors of the bill, which seeks to prohibit sexual harassment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
