A man identified as Usman Buda Mai Hanji was in the earlier hours of Sunday June 25 2023, beaten to death in Sokoto for alleged blasphemy against Prophet Muhammad. According to reports, the deceased who had been a butcher by occupation, had been apprehended and thoroughly beaten to death by a group of unidentified men at the Sokoto Main Abattoir . It is currently unclear the exact manner of blasphemous utterances Usman Buda made against the prophet. Members of the police office in the state had stormed the scene but had arrived too late to prevent the tragic situation. All perpetrators allegedly fled the scene upon sighting the police.

Addressing the mob action against the murdered butcher, Governor of Sokoto State, Dr Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto has implored residents of the community and the state to remain calm and law abiding at all times. The governor made the plea in a statement signed by his spokesperson, Malam Abubakar Bawa. Dr Ahmed Aliyu Sokoto further cautioned the people against any act capable of degrading the personality of Prophet Muhammad SAW especially in a State like Sokoto which is predominantly an Islamic community. He also assured that intense efforts are being made to bring the perpetrators of the mob action against the butcher to book.
