A Cameroonian man resident in Yaoundé, Simon Ngonja, has died a few days after he was attacked by his German Shepherd on 11th June, 2023. According to reports, Simon Ngonja had just returned from a trip and had been attempting to get in the house when the dog pounced and ferociously mauled its owner. The deceased had tried to escape the dog's clutches but had been weakened by the surprise attack. A neighbour who happened to be a soldier, had shot and killed the dog in a bid to save Ngonja's life.

The badly hurt dog owner had been rushed to the hospital with several wounds while bleeding profusely. After a few days in hospital, Simon Ngonja gave up the ghost on the morning of Thursday 15th June, 2023. Prior to his attack and eventual death, Simon was a senior executive in the services of the Prime Minister in Yaoundé. Neighbours have recounted how the deceased had cared for the dog that had cost him his life. They also claimed not to have had any prior observation about the German Shepherd being violent.
