Following conviction of former deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice Ekweremadu and medical doctor Dr Obinna Obeta at the Old Bailey in the UK on charges of organ trafficking, Sonia Ekweremadu has in an interview with The BBC revealed that she feels guilty and sad at what happened to her parents because of her. Sonia also stated that for a personal and bias perspective, her parents did not deserve the conviction but since the law had taken its course, she'd always support her parents and find ways for them to move forward as a family. On Friday 5th May 2023, The Court sentenced Ike Ekweremadu to a total of 9 years and 8 months in prison, while his wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months for plotting to harvest a man’s kidney. Dr Obinna Obeta received a prison sentence of 10 years as well as a revocation of his medical licence. The trio had attempted to procure a kidney on behalf of Sonia Ekweremadu, the couple's daughter.
25 year old Sonia Ekweremadu further told the BBC that the situation was even tougher for her as she was undergoing dialysis. She stated that she was suffering a condition called Nephrotic Syndrome which is a kidney disease resulting from the presence of a really small kidney punctured with bigger holes. She further revealed that treatment required either of two things: Dialysis for the rest of her life or get a transplant.
