Nigerians/netizens of Yoruba origin have labelled the manner in which the veteran actors greeted the Ooni as "disrespectful". According to gatekeepers of the Yoruba tradition, the duo had been expected to bow or prostrate to the king in greeting. On the other hand, netizens of Igbo descent have defended the way Pete Edochie and Kanayo .O. Kanayo chose to exchange pleasantries with the Ooni. They stated that it is unheard of in Igbo culture for anyone to bow to another. Many also defended this mode of greeting by state that Pete Edochie was old enough to be the Ooni's father and if anyone ought to get any form of special homage, it should have been the veteran actor.
