"Please Temper Justice with Mercy" The Nigerian House of Representatives Begs The UK Government on Behalf of the Ekweremadus

 Following the trial and subsequent conviction of former deputy senate president Ike Ekweremadu, his wife Beatrice Ekweremadu and medical doctor Dr Obinna Obeta, after a 6 week trial at the Old Bailey on charges of organ trafficking, the Nigerian House of Representatives has written to the government of the UK, seeking clemency on behalf of the trio. The lawmakers implored the UK court to “temper justice with mercy” in the sentencing of the lawmaker, his wife and doctor who were found guilty of human trafficking with intent of exploitation on 24th March 2023 with sentencing to be handed down on Friday, 5th May 2023.

During plenary which held on Tuesday, 2nd May 2023, the Nigerian lawmakers asked the federal government to take diplomatic steps to “intervene” in the trial of the former deputy Senate President. The resolution was passed following the adoption of a motion of urgent public importance sponsored by Toby Okechukwu, a lawmaker from Enugu. The lawmakers instructed the clerk of the lower legislative chamber to “convey” their resolutions in writing to the British High Commission, the UK government and the parliament.
