Olympic Gold Medalist Chioma Ajunwa Decorated as Deputy Commissioner of Police

 First Nigerian Olympics Gold Medalist athlete turned policewoman, Chioma Ajunwa has been decorated and promoted to the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police in the Nigeria Police Force on Thursday May 11, by Assistant Inspector-General of Police, Frank Mba. Prior to her promotion, Chioma Ajunwa was an assistant commissioner of police. The former athlete also holds a national award as Member of the Order of Niger(MON) conferred by Sani Abacha , Nigeria's military head of state at the time.

Chioma Ajunwa who is a former track and field athlete as well as football player, made history as the first Nigerian to win a gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, USA  and the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal in a field event. Ajunwa remains the  only woman to have competed at both the FIFA Women's World Cup as a footballer and the Olympics as a track and field athlete. On 1 October 2010, Nigeria celebrated its 50th Independence anniversary. As part of that celebration, on Thursday 30 September 2010, former President, Goodluck Jonathan, conferred special Golden Jubilee Independence Awards on 50 distinguished Nigerians and friends of Nigeria which included Ajunwa, for their contributions to the development of the country.

Congratulations to Ms Ajunwa for adding yet another prestigious feather to her cap of achievements.
