"First Ladies Deserve Retirement Benefits"Aisha Buhari Declares

First lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Mrs Aisha Buhari, has declared that outgoing first ladies deserve privileges such as the provision of vehicles, sponsored medical treatments and provision of stipends and other such benefits enjoyed by ex-presidents and other politicians who vacate political office. Mrs Buhari gave this opinion while speaking in Abuja at the launch of a book authored by the President of the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association (DEPOWA), Mrs Vickie Anwuli Irabor.

In defending her opinion on why exiting First Ladies should be extended the same privileges as their husbands, Mrs Buhari stated: “I married my husband as the wife of a former president. I am going in a few days as a wife of a former president a second time. They should consider us as former first ladies. They should incorporate the first ladies, give us some privileges that we deserve as first ladies, not just the former presidents”. Mrs Buhari urged the federal government to consider wives of former presidents and governors as "people that need help" and not as "magic makers". She further implored the federal government to do more for exiting presidents as the privileges given to them after leaving office, aren't commensurate to the things they go through while in office.
