Shakur ascribed his "game" and career launch to Oakland, according to the law allowing for this honor, despite the fact that he was born in Harlem and had lived in a number of locations, including Baltimore, Maryland, and Marin City, California.
In addition to keeping its original name, Tupac Shakur Way will be given to the part of MacArthur Boulevard close to Lake Merritt where Shakur formerly lived.
To mark this transition, commemorative plaques and signs will be paid for by the Tupac Shakur Foundation.
Street names have already been given to famous people in Oakland, including rapper and record producer Too Short and co-founder of the Black Panther Party Huey P. Newton.
Tupac Shakur tragically passed away in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas in 1996 at the age of 25.
The law passed by the City Council intends to make sure that the renamed section of the street acts as a reminder of Shakur's contributions to Oakland and acknowledges the role that art and culture play in bringing about positive social change.
The execution of the name change did not have a set deadline.
