Reps Seek to Ban Medical Doctors and Dentists from Leaving the Country

In a post currently making the rounds on social media, the Nigerian House of Representatives has revealed that a bill to prevent Nigerian trained medical practitioners as well as dental practitioners from leaving the country within 5 years of practice has passed second reading. The bill which is supposedly meant to curtail the brain drain and "japa syndrome" amongst medical practitioners, is to prevent these professionals from being granted full licenses until they have worked for a minimum of five years in Nigeria.

The Bill which was sponsored by Representative Ganiyu Abiodun Johnson and presided by the Speaker Honourable Femi Gbajabiamila, has currently passed second reading as at Thursday 6th April, 2023. In defending the bill, Johnson told The House that it was only fair for these medical practitioners to "give back to the society" because they enjoyed taxpayers subsidies during training. Nigerian medical practitioners have reacted harshly to the bill by calling it "draconian" and a violation of fundamental human rights. Members of the medical profession have urged the Nigerian Medical Association to stand up" and fight for the protection of "its people".
