Friesland Campina WAMCO Nigeria Plc, producers of Peak Milk have apologised to Christians after receiving unexpected backlash for their advert celebrating Good Friday, a solemn Christian celebration commemorating the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ Peak Milk had posted a picture showing its can with two holes to depict the nailing of Christ with captions making reference to the brand.
The advert received harsh criticism from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) as the association via its General Secretary, Joseph Daramola, stated that the Easter celebration image was an “insensitive, offensive, and unacceptable,” that was made for commercial purposes. Joseph Daramola further accused the milk company of trying to "exploit the Christian population in Nigeria for profit."He also said it was "disrespectful to millions of Christians in Nigeria and beyond" while revealing that the association considered asking Christians to boycott the brand.
Amid threats of a boycott, the Executive Director of Friesland Campina, Ore Famurewa, wrote the President of CAN, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, apologising for the advert.Famurewa, in a letter dated April 10, 2023, said: “We hereby restate our commitment to our unwavering mission of nurturing Nigeria while maintaining the respect of all religious laws, tenets and guidelines. Once again, please accept our deepest apology and pledge to prevent a reoccurrence of such in the future. Do accept the assurances of my esteemed regards.”
