Former lawmaker Senator Dino Melaye, who represented the Kogi West Senatorial District in the 8th National Assembly, has declared his intention to run in the Kogi state governorship election. Dino Melaye publicly disclosed his ambition when he put up a campaign poster captioned "no more stealing and killings” on his official Twitter handle on Wednesday 29th March, 2023. Dino Melaye was the PDP's national agent and spokesperson of the PDP's presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar in the recently conducted presidential election.

The governorship election in Kogi state is scheduled to take place on 11 November, 2023 and Dino Melaye's declaration of his intention to run for governor comes after the People's Democratic Party's Governorship Screening Committee for Kogi State screened and cleared the former lawmaker representing Kogi West. Dino has called upon his supporters to support his gubernatorial ambition. Dino Melaye first contested for governor in the Kogi State gubernatorial election which was held on 16 November 2019. On 3 September 2019, He lost his gubernatorial ambition in a keenly contested primary election where he came third, with a total of 70 votes behind Engr. Musa Wada who won with 748 votes.
