Video:"Naira Exchange Deadline Cannot be Shifted" CBN Governor Declares

Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele has revealed that there will be no shift of the deadline given to Nigerians to tender their old notes to their respective banks. Goodwin Emefiele made this known in a meeting with members of the press. In November 2022, The CBN issued a public notice to Nigerians asking them to deposit their 200, 500 and 1,000 naira notes to their banks because by January 31st 2023, the old currencies will no longer be recognised as legal tender in Nigeria. The Central Bank has released new notes intended as replacement for the quoted sums.

Governor of CBN stated that the call for a deadline postponement cannot be heeded because 100 days are enough for all citizens to tender their old notes to their respective banks. Godwin Emefiele also said that the Central Bank took all necessary steps to ensure that banks remained operation for longer hours and also opened its doors to customers on Saturdays, in order to accommodate the deposit of the old naira notes by the public. Hence, the Central Bank sees no need to discuss an extension of the stipulated deadline.
