The management of Bingham University located in Karu, Nasarawa state, has prohibited the use of Smartphones by its students. On Thursday 18th January, the university released an internal memorandum informing students of the ban. The memorandum signed by a certain Dr Esther J. Dyaji, stated that the prohibition on the use of Smartphones takes place with immediate effect and violators will have their phones confiscated and also face appropriate sanction.

Bingham University is a private university under ownership of the Evangelical Church of West Africa (ECWA). Nigerians have reacted with hilarity to the memorandum by wondering if Nigeria is truly vested in national development because higher institutions are beginning to focus too much on morality which is a primary function of religious institutions. Many Nigerians have declared that it's absolutely senseless of a university to ban the use of Smartphones in 2023 and termed it a case of heavy-handedness and backward thinking.
