President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday, 17 January 2023, bagged the African Award for strengthening Peace in Nouakchott, capital of Mauritania. The award was presented to the president by the Abu Dhabi Peace Forum for his leadership role in promoting peace on the continent, through regular interventions, counsels and conciliatory positions.

Nigerians have reacted harshly to the conferment of a "peace award" on president Buhari. Some wondered if the people who gave him this award were blind and failed to see that Buhari's home country is in a constant state of chaos. Yet others wonder if PMB paid to receive the award and wonder at exactly what criteria was used in determining Nigeria's president eligible for the peace award. Netizens also said that President Buhari made a mockery of himself by indeed travelling to Mauritania to receive this "sham" award. They declared that if foreigners cannot see the truth, surely the president and the members of his cabinet are neither blind nor deaf to the chaotic state of Nigeria.
