The Central Bank of Nigeria has released details and unique features of the recently released naira notes that can help citizens differentiate between counterfeit and genuine notes. The apex bank urged Nigerians to be vigilant and not fall victims of fraudulent circulation of the new notes. The current N200, N500 and N1000 notes remain legal tender until the deadline of 31st January, 2023.

The Central Bank listed key features of the new #500 and #1000 naira notes. With the #500 note having a hand engraved portrait, windowed metallic security thread, watermark and see through print. On the other hand, the newly produced #1000 naira note has optically variable ink, kinegram as well as the windowed metallic security thread and see through Print of the new #500 naira note. The CBN has cited the necessity to cut costs as a major reason for its decision to change the outlook of the naira notes. The apex bank also claims that forgery has become harder with the newly produced notes.
