A Kano State Magistrate Court presided by Justice Aminu Muhammad Gabari has ordered the public flogging of skitmakers, Mubarak Isa Muhammad and Nazifi Muhammad Bala for defaming the character of Kano State Governor, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on Tiktok. The skitmakers are to receive a total of 40 strokes of cane for their skit which implied that the governor does not see am empty land without putting it up for sale. They also joked that the governor "sleeps a lot".
In addition to the joint 40 strokes of cane, the skit making duo have been sentenced to sweep and wash the toilets in the court's premises for a period of 30 days. The sentencing was handed to them after they pled guilty to a two-count charge of defamation and inciting public disturbance. The presiding judge also ordered Isa Muhammad and Muhammad Bala to make a video apologising to Governor Ganduje on their social media platforms.
Mixed reactions have trailed the news of the skitmakers' punishment as some considered it a demeaning violation of their fundamental human rights while others say they ought to abide by the shari'a laws of the state they reside in.
