Dr Vaishnavy Laxman, a consultant gynaecologist, caused an unborn baby to be accidentally decapitated inside his mother’s womb as she carried out a bungled delivery. It was determined that the doctor should have given the 30-year old patient an emergency Caesarean section as the premature infant was in a breech position – but instead attempted to carry out the delivery naturally.
Tragedy struck when the doctor urged the patient to push while herself applying traction to the baby’s legs, it was alleged. The force caused the infant’s legs, arms and torso to become detached leaving the head still in his mother’s womb. Two other doctors carried out a C-section on the agonised pregnant woman to remove the child's head. The first time mum, Laura Gallazzi, had a few minutes to say goodbye to her son whose head had been briefly "reattached" to his body. The incident occurred at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, Scotland. Devastated Laura had said in interviews that she could not forgive the doctor for her mistake and that she had “blood on her hands”.

Dr Vaishnavy Laxman was arrested but later cleared by a medical tribunal which ruled out a criminal investigation and stated that there was no impairment of the doctor's fitness to practice. The tribunal further cleared her to work at another hospital. She is now practicing medicine in Kauvery Hospital, Chennai India, where her work is claimed to be “extraordinary”.
