Following the suspension of the eight months long strike action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities after reaching a tentative agreement with the government on 14 October 2022, the federal government has once again dealt these academics an unexpected hand by paying lecturers half their salaries for the month of October. The federal government made the payment of half salaries to these lecturers on the premise that the lecturers only worked for 18 days in the month of October.

Members of The Academic Staff Union of Universities have expressed shock and displeasure at this unexpected hand dealt by the federal government. The Union's president Professor Emmanuel Osodeke while speaking to pressmen indicated that the members of the union's council will soon be holding an emergency meeting to decide on the next step of action regarding the federal government's deed which he revealed left the lecturers shocked. While students and the nation at large anticipate the meeting and its outcome, many have speculated that the union just might decide to embark on another strike action.
