ASUU Protests Half Salaries; Declares Lecture Free Day

Following the unexpected hand dealt university lecturers by the federal government where the lecturers received a half salary payment for the month of October after suspending the eight months long strike, the Academic Staff Union of Universities has decided to embark on a nationwide protest. Chairman of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke confirmed this latest development to the press.

According to Professor Osodeke, the planned protest was organised nationwide  at the various branch levels of ASUU and each branch of the academic union would choose their own dates. Branch ASUU chairman of the University of Lagos, Dr Dele Ashiru, confirmed to pressmen that UNILAG is set to hold its own protest on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the Julius Berger auditorium on campus.

The Federal Government has defended its action of half salary payment by stating the lecturers were paid pro rata for the 18 working days they had in October. Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, insists that the lecturers cannot receive payment for work not done and referred to the government's action towards the lecturers as "the government’s legitimate interest in preventing moral hazard and discouraging disruptive industrial actions."
