Nigerian Singer Teniola Apata better known by the mononym Teni, joined a number of other musicians to receive an award conferring them members of the Order of The Niger. The award was in recognition of their achievements in the music industry. Teni who walked up on stage to receive her award from president Muhammadu Buhari allegedly displayed an attitude that many people have termed "gangster" and unfit for the occasion.

Keen watchers of the short video making the rounds on Teni's reception of the award, claim that the singer had been disrespectful to the president by refusing to receive a handshake from him and also glaringly snobbing him. They attacked the singer for showing disrespect to the nation's president while stating that she should have rejected the award if she had been that displeased with Buhari. Yet others claim that nothing unusual occurred in the video and Teni had acted just as any normal Nigerian would. Supporters of the singer have ordered critical analysts of the short video to stop trying to find problems where there are none.
