An internet meme(pronounced mee-im) is an idea, behaviour, style, or image that is spread via the Internet, often through social media platforms. The term "meme"(from the Greek mimema, meaning “imitated”) was introduced in 1976 by British evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his work The Selfish Gene.
Meme formats are usually from popular television shows, movies, or video games and users then add humorous text and images over it. Memes have become a regular part of our social media use in Nigeria. In fact, Nigerian users of social media use memes to make a message more relatable with the public. Some influencers have become well-known for their memes and are referred to as "meme gods".
