Lagos Danfo Drivers Set to Embark on Strike Action

Commercial bus drivers in Lagos state, commonly addressed as Danfo Drivers have revealed their intention to go on a 7 day strike action which is set to commence on 31st October, 2022. The drivers under the Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria (JDWAN) have cited extortion and violent harassment by parks and garage authorities as reasons for the proposed strike action. The drivers lament that they lose half their daily earnings to the motor park thugs usually referred to as agberos.

The association in a statement issued by its National Leader, Akintade S. Abiodun; Chairman, Opeyemi Sulaiman; General secretary, Ajimatanarareje A. Feyisayo and Assistant Secretary, Taofik Hassan, scheduled Monday, October 31, for the commencement of the strike action and has instructed its members to adhere to the plan. The Joint Drivers Welfare Association of Nigeria has implored the public to understand their plight. The association urged the Lagos State Government to respond promptly to their demand for a total ban against paying various unnecessary fees to motor park thugs at every bus stop in the state. The drivers clamour that the only acceptable fee ought to be the payment for tickets solely issued by the state government.
