No Nigerian Film is Eligible for the 2023 Oscars

The Nigerian Official Selection Committee (NOSC) of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that it will not be submitting a film for the 2023 Oscars, as no Nollywood film met the eligibility criteria. Chairperson of NOSC, Chineze Anyaene-Abonyi made this known to the press, while expressing regret that the committee could not find a film suitable for the award.

In 2019, for the first time in Nigeria's film history, the Nollywood film "Lion Heart" produced and directed by legendary star Genevieve Nnaji was selected as the Nigerian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards.  It was the first time that Nigeria had submitted a film to the Oscars. The  Academy however disqualified the submission of the film ‘Lionheart’ for not meeting the non-English dialogue criteria. Nigeria's last film submission to the Oscars was in 2020. The submission was the film titled "The Milkmaid" produced and directed by Desmond Ovbiagele.
