Longest-serving monarch, Queen Elizabeth II has died. The Queen died passed away on 8 September 2022, at Balmoral Estate, Scotland at the age of 96. Her family had gathered at the estate earlier in the day as a result of growing concerns about the monarch's health.
Queen Elizabeth ascended the throne in 1952 at the age of 25 and reigned for 70 years which was the longest of any British monarch. With the Queen's death, her eldest son, Charles, The Former Prince of Wales, will lead the Palace in mourning as new King and head of state. In a statement, Buckingham Palace said:
"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow. All the Queen's children travelled to Balmoral, near Aberdeen, after doctors placed the Queen under medical supervision. Her grandson, Prince William, is also there, with his brother Prince Harry on the way."
