The founder and lead pastor of David Christian Centre (DCC) in Lagos State, Pastor Kingsley Okonkwo has explained why marrying after divorce is neither a sin nor adultery.
The cleric, who is also a public speaker and writer, clarified the difference between ‘putting away’ and the ‘bill of divorcement, stating that there are some misconceptions about the two terms.
While stating emphatically that Jesus is not against divorced persons remarrying, noted that he is rather against remarrying while being separated.
In his words:
“Jesus never said you
can’t remarry when you are divorced, I don’t even know where people got it
from. So what confuses people is that Jesus said if you put away your wife and
you go and remarry, you are committing adultery.
“So in that chapter
and everywhere Jesus spoke about divorce, there are two words, in fact, read
that verse for me, and I say unto you whosoever shall put away his wife except
for fornication and shall marry another committed adultery and whosoever shall
marry her who has been put away doeth commit adultery.
“So there are two
things mentioned in both the Jewish law, the Moses law and that Jesus even was
reiterating in this chapter. There is the putting away and there is what is bill
of divorcement is the proper divorce. When you are separated you are not divorced.
Some couples separate so that they cn work on the marriage, sometimes they come
together.”
“In counseling, they call it controlled separation,
so you are separated but we are working with a counselor. So separation is not
divorce, you can separate and come back, when you are separated you can’t
remarry because you are still in one marriage, that’s what Jesus means by when
you separate and you go and remarry you are committing adultery, because you
are not divorced and you if you go and marry somebody that just separated and
not divorced, you are also committing adultery because the person is not
properly divorced, that’s what it means.
The Pastor while explaining the reason for the mixing of the terms, divorce, and separation, said it was caused by some Bible translations.
He goes on to say further:
“The Greek word ‘putting
away’ is ‘apoluo’ and the Greek word ‘Bill
of Divorcement’ is ‘apostasion’ , there are two different words but because sometimes
the Bible translations, they interchange it, they make it look like putting away and
bill of divorcement are the same thing, they are not the same thing. The Bible
is clear that once you divorce someone, you can remarry.”
